What train routes are or are not included?
This map shows infrequent, longer-distance trains on the Amtrak and VIA Rail networks. Trains running multiple times a day, like the Missouri River Runner and Cascades services, are not included, nor are trains like the Borealis that provide a service overlay on top of long-distance routes.
Excluded routes are shown with a grey line for reference.
Which train times are used?
Not all trains run on all days of the week. The timetables here are representative, and do not reflect all runs of the named train. Schedules are regularly modified due to trackwork, daylight savings, and other operational reasons.
The only definitive source for the timetable of a specific train on a specific day is the Amtrak website.
How are sunrise, sunset, and twilight calculated?
Sunrise, Sunset, and twilight are calculated using General Solar Position Calculation formulas from the NOAA Global Monitoring Division. Fully blue indicates the sun is 18° below the horizon, while fully red indicates ~0.833° above.
How accurate is it?
Amtrak and VIA Rail's data only includes station stop times. Times between stations are estimated assuming a constant travel speed, which will be inaccurate in areas with varied terrain.
In addition, terrain, weather, and train delays will all affect how much the scenery is visible along the tracks.
